I know not everyone loves breakfast, so let’s just call it the first meal of the day.

I actually think it’s an important one. Eating something when you wake up can make a big difference. I used to snack a lot at night, which meant I was never hungry in the morning. I told myself I just wasn’t a “breakfast person.”

But once I found foods I genuinely enjoy, and stopped filling up late at night, I started waking up hungry. Now, breakfast is often my favourite meal of the day.

1. Açaí bowls
On a recent trip to San José del Cabo, Mexico, we found a little coffee shop near our hotel called Coffee Lab. I ordered my first açaí bowl and I’ve been thinking about them ever since. I love the slushy/crunchy texture and the mix of flavours. It’s like a smoothie, but better.

I had one recently in Calgary at Oakberry in Chinook Mall. It was delicious… and $20. So I started making my own at home using a frozen açaí blend, protein powder (whey or plant-based), peanut butter, and granola.

Honestly? I can make so many more bowls at home for the same price and customize them exactly how I like.

2. Greek yogurt with berries
My second favourite breakfast is similar, but simpler: Greek yogurt with berries.

Low-fat dairy is one of the highest-quality protein sources you can eat—there’s a reason whey protein is so popular for building muscle. Plus, you get calcium for bone health and probiotics for gut health. It’s quick, satisfying, and really nourishing.

3. Eggs on the go
While I clearly lean toward sweeter breakfasts, eggs are also a great option.

When I’m out and need something quick, I’ll grab breakfast from Starbucks. The bacon and gouda sandwich is delicious and the egg bites are a favourite too. I’ll occasionally go for the spinach and egg white wrap, it’s a solid, tasty choice.
