One thing I have noticed about getting older is that my skin is getting thinner.

I don’t mean I am more easily offended – haha – I mean my skin seems literally thinner.

Turns out this is pretty common but it can lead to more that just crepiness – it can mean skin tears easily and is more fragile.

There are a couple of reasons for this – collagen production decreases and skin turn over gets less efficient as we age. Here is a video about skin thinning if you want to know more about why this happens.

What can be done about? It seems two things that can help are

  1. using a retinol for increasing skin thickness and
  2. using a mild acid like lactic acid to help with skin turnover.

Here are my favorite body lotions that I have been using for a few months and I have seen some improvement with.

1. AmLactin – this version of it contains 15% lactic acid and it really works. It makes your skin super soft as well.

2. Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol – This one is unfortunately only available in the US but it is a very good affordable way to get a body retinol. I recently made a trip to the US and stocked up 🙂 Look for the word Retinol on the label because the other creams they sell look very similar. This retinol cream is available in Canada and it is a little more expensive but most of the reviews are quite good.

3. Eucerin – this one is easily found at most drug stores and contain Urea (another mild acid). Look fo the 10% strength for really smooth hydrated skin.

Keeping your body moisturized if important – especially in the winter!
